The Burgess Rural story and our most valuable asset.
The Burgess Rural Journey.
Burgess Rural is an Australian privately owned company with a long history in agriculture, dating back to 1979. Our first acquisition was "Laurie Park," a 268-hectare property in Kalkallo, Victoria. In 1990, we registered the Lockerbie Merino Stud, a name now synonymous with high-quality merino breeding and recognized for earning numerous awards at agricultural shows.
Since then, we have steadily expanded our agricultural portfolio. Today, Burgess Rural owns approximately 10,681 hectares across Central Victoria and the Riverina in New South Wales. While our primary focus is sheep farming, with around 30,000 breeding ewes producing over 24,000 lambs and 14,500 wethers annually, we also crop 497 hectares each year, rotating canola, wheat, and barley. Additionally, we manage a herd of 2,000 cattle.
Our breeding operations are vertically integrated across four locations. We manage a range of activities, from self-replicating merino breeding to dual-purpose breeding that produces first-cross ewes for fat lamb production. Burgess Rural's approach ensures continual genetic improvement by retaining only the best breeders and selecting replacement rams based on the most current ASBV and breeding data available.
