Our Story

Cultivating legacy.

A dynamic, multi-generational agricultural company committed to sustainable farming, innovation, and producing premium livestock and crops

Burgess Rural is a proudly Australian, family-owned farming business with deep roots in agriculture dating back to 1979. What began as a small Victorian enterprise has grown into a diverse and dynamic farming operation spanning more than 11,000 hectares across Victoria and New South Wales.

Our story started in Kalkallo, Victoria, where the first parcel of land was purchased over four decades ago. From those early days, the Burgess family built a reputation for hard work, integrity, and an enduring commitment to the land. That same spirit continues to guide us today as we balance tradition with innovation across every corner of our business.

As we’ve grown, so too has our vision. From the fine wool Merino flocks of Glenaroua Station — one of Victoria’s oldest pastoral properties — to our thriving mixed enterprises in the Riverina, we’ve stayed true to what matters most: producing premium livestock and crops through sustainable, responsible farming.

At the heart of Burgess Rural is a focus on dual-purpose sheep, delivering both high-quality wool and meat to trusted markets. Our Merino genetics, refined over generations, are the foundation of our success and connect each of our properties — from Glenaroua’s historic pastures to the productive hills of Lockerbie in Holbrook, New South Wales.

Lockerbie stands as a symbol of what’s possible when care meets vision. Once a pine plantation, it has been carefully transformed into rich pastureland supporting both sheep and Angus beef. Its rolling hills and fertile flats now tell a story of renewal and resilience, where every paddock reflects our long-term commitment to sustainability and soil health.

Nearby, North Billabong and Bucki strengthen our New South Wales operations. Acquired in recent years, these properties highlight Burgess Rural’s ongoing evolution — expanding our cropping footprint, supporting prime lamb and beef production, and ensuring a balanced, forward-looking approach to the land. Bucki’s integrated system of cropping and livestock is an example of how to produce consistently high-quality lambs and strong market performance.

Across every property, our approach is guided by the same principles — responsible land management, animal welfare, and respect for the people who make our business possible. We take pride in our history and remain focused on operating efficiently, sustainably, and with a clear vision for the future of Australian agriculture.
